Harold Hutchison on the siege mentality in US immigration policy: "Indeed, these days, it seems that one who wishes to identify himself as a conservative must accept the neo-"blood and soil" argument that emanates from Pat Buchanan and others like him. This argument claims that truly being an American is largely a function of who one is born to - and also argues that those from the "Third World" are somehow incapable of being Americans".
Here's how it is. I want to move to the United States. I think the United Kingdom is a thoroughly flawed place - and it's only getting worse - and I think that the future for anyone with more than a scrap of intelligence and aged under about 40 is outside of the UK. It's a sinking ship, why stay on it?
Keep ancient lands, you storied pomp! cries she / with silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breath free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
I'm here. I'm waiting. I want to breathe free. Perhaps the US State Department would like to let me in.
