Matt Webb has a write-up from BarCamp London. I really enjoyed Matt's presentation - and there are many Frontier and Frontier-esque ideas lurking in his ideas about piping and a decent desktop web app integration. Right, I need pizza. 2006-09-07T22:22:43Z
These cartoons come close to home, having taken my shoes off twice and had my bags manhandled at least three times in the last 12 hours. 2006-09-07T22:15:13Z
ReadWriteWeb has a roundup of Italian web apps. It's Pizza 2.0. 2006-09-07T21:59:32Z
Wow, PodCamp Registration is currently over 300 people! And it was mentioned on today's Daily Source Code. 2006-09-07T21:49:09Z
Kent, you knew you were going to get linked, right? I mean, "The other finds good stories / For you to read when you get up". Sorry about that, I've been a bit lax. And by the time this little stash of links sees the light of day, I don't know what time it'll be any more. 2006-09-07T08:19:02Z
Someone's got the Starbucks rage. So, here I am, bang in the middle of Heathrow and we've got a little bit of Seattle right here. If you want quiet, avoid Starbucks. I mean, those coffee machines are damn noisy. 2006-09-07T08:16:23Z
I read Malcolm Gladwell's post on the NCAA the other day and really enjoyed it. 2006-09-07T08:12:28Z
I'm not sure that I agree with the article that Ophelia has picked up on. The sentiment thing is silly, but I do think its possible to wean people off irrationalisms. I am an ex-supernaturalist. I stopped being a supernaturalist when I realised that supernaturalistic thinking was silly. Simple as that. 2006-09-07T08:02:53Z
This sounds absolutely cracking - applying Hindu 'philosophy' (read: bullshit) to database design. 2006-09-07T07:59:40Z
If you are looking for some educational viewing, have a look at a Google Video of Dawkins' documentary. 2006-09-07T07:57:59Z
Reyhan Harmanci on alternative medicine: "We've looked into most of the practices and, biochemically or physically, their supposed effects lie somewhere between highly improbable and impossible". As for acupuncture? "acupuncture was formalized in a complex way over the past 100 years, mostly in Europe and France and after the Communist takeover in China. Before that time there was no consistent formalization of acupuncture points or what each place was supposed to do. It was largely regional, and the thinking varied from city to city". 2006-09-07T07:56:21Z
Heathrow has a live flight departures site that's accessible, even though the Internet isn't (due to wifi problems). It's very cool, as you can easily see your flight without having to hunt down monitors or listen for announcements). 2006-09-07T07:53:56Z
Apparently, users are getting pissed off at Facebook's improvements. I absolutely adore the improvements to Facebook. It's now the only social network worth using. If they added RSS, it'd be perfect. This kind of reaction is why Marc Canter exists.

Ooh, DORKBOT!!! That's so damn cool. If you're in Tokyo on the 19th, go along. That's seriously badass. I'm pissed off that I missed Burning Dork. 2006-09-07T07:48:52Z
Sometimes when I hear of the "persecution" that religious people suffer at the hands of the evil secular society, it requires something like this to remind me how facile they really are. Good thing that PZ has found someone who will vanquish the evil religious nuttiness. Shame they're a satirist. Perhaps the United States could turn on it's goddamn TVs and learn something (although the presence of Star Jones and/or Katie Couric is a bit like a fuck you to intelligence). 2006-09-07T07:41:54Z
I must say, I'm a big fan of MySpace's new plans to offer artist-controlled MP3 purchasing. I'm not a big fan of MySpace, but this soing to shake some shitty 2006-09-07T07:31:41Z
I'm at Heathrow (T.3), trying to use the free wi-fi while waiting for American Airlines to open the gate. I got a free wi-fi card on the front of MacUser last month, but it's not actually connecting. I also didn't know that we now have to take our shoes off while going through security. Fully paranoid fantasy compatible, see? Still, I wouldn't have worn Docs (Martens that is, not Searles) if I knew we had the War on Footwear. I did manage to get a sealed moist flannel through the checkpoint - proving that I'm as much of an anti-freedom scumbag as you all knew I was.

Oh my - it's 4:28am and I'm getting ready to go to the airport. 2006-09-07T03:27:42Z
Koz, I'm not using caching yet. I'm pulling data in and storing it locally - this is a backup plan and not a very good one. Basically, I haven't worked out how it's all going to work - I'm hacking up whatever's easiest. I'm also working on the presumption that anyone who is (a) using blogs.opml.org; and (b) wants to render their OPML blog on another server; is fairly geeky - and smart enough to install and customise some PHP scripts according to good instructions. 2006-09-06T23:52:21Z
Here we go 2006-09-07T20:46:27Z
I've arrived! I'm all checked in. I left my house at 0530 London time and got here, on the other side of the Atlantic, at about 2130 London time (or 1630 EST). The sun is shining in Mass. and I'm feeling great! I'm going out to eat in Harvard Square. PodCampers, see you either tomorrow at the Berkman Centre get together or on Saturday.
The plane left London an hour late, but I did manage to watch a large chunk of Mon Oncle - perhaps my favourite movie ever made. It's subtitled but it needn't be. I bought it on DVD at the airport and it really is superb.

I am a vegetarian,
an atheist,
like to code in Ruby and
Scala (and Java, but let’s not talk about that), and
noodle about with microformats
and the Semantic Web.
I have
an MA in
philosophy from Heythrop College,
University of London. My philosophical interests are in analytic metaphysics,
ontology, modality, the work of Armstrong,
Lewis,
Kripke,
Russell and
Plato.
I have a strange, unfulfilled interest in
Gadamer’s
hermeneutics. I’ve been influenced
by Gadamer, by Kierkegaard,
Nietzsche,
Rawls and
Nozick.
Musically, I like
jazz fusion, soul and P-Funk. My musical nirvana would be a mixture of Beethoven, Miles Davis and George Clinton
topped with a side-serving of Erykah, Jill and Angie.
I also write for the Citizendium, an online encyclopedia project. If you know about stuff, you should join in. I occasionally produce audio recordings for The Pod Delusion.
